As I mentioned few posts ago, I had some DIY projects going on. This one that I feature today is one old dress that I wore in this outfit post. I've been dying to tune the dress somehow because its way too plain, but then again the color and fabric is so lovely! So here I am - tuning the dress. It's not ready yet, I just wanted to show you my favorite "trick" of sewing: color blocking. Are you ready?!
This is how the dress looks like - it's very very simple and plain, also it's about 1-2 sizes too big for me so my next plan for tuning is to give some shape to it, I will definitely show you how I do it!
And this is how it should look after we have finished with the project! Geometric patterns and shapes inspire me so so much and actually my next big big plan is to use some leftovers to make a color-block blouse. This dress was more of a practise for this tehnique.
So how to do it?
1. Fold the dress into half: turn the right side to the left, all the work goes on on the left side :) Also, I must warn you that you'd do your cutting from the right side - the side with "open" ends. So, on that side, cut out a shape you'd like, I did triangle, but hey - you can do squares, circles or whatever you like! Also, it can be as big as you want, I actually kind a regret I wasn't bold enough to make the circles bigger because then the outcome would be AWESOME! Don't be afraid of cutting huge junks out! Next time I'll definitely keep that in mind.
2. After cutting, it should look something like this:
3. Then take the little piece you cut out and use it as a template. Put it on the fabric you want to use and fix it with bobby pins. Cut out the black shape but remember - it has to be about 1cm wider than the small one so don't cut it exactly the same (for the seam).
4. This is how it should all look like after cutting it. PS: Do the same with other piece - you need 2 pieces since there are 2 holes. :)
5. Then fix the black piece on the dress and just start sewing! I did it by hand but of course it's soo much easier with sewing machine, because the stiches will be straighter, it will all look so much cleaner and better, also it takes less time. Not having sewing machine is mainly the reason I don't sew so much right now, though I miss it so much :(
And that's pretty much it! Isn't it easy?
You can do WHATEVER in this techinque - for example, why not cut out some wide lines from an old t-shirt and sew there some other color of lines :) It gives SO much life to your old clothes. Why through it away, if you can make it new with just few simple steps? After seeing the results of this project, I just got even more fond of color-blocking and trust me when I say this: I will make so many alterations to my clothes using this tehnique! What do you think about it? What would you change about this dress more? Would you add some pearls, studs or something else? Let me know!
xoxo
